Playing Craps

[ Back to Craps Tutorial Section ]

Hopefully, you have read the Craps Primer and Craps Layout sections first. If so, you have the basic knowledge needed to hit the Craps table. In this section, I will go over the basic flow of a Craps game by illustrating an actual round of craps.

The Start

We are going to follow an imaginary character named Frank who is about to embark on a game of craps. Frank has just walked up to the table when a new round was about to being.

Come Out Roll: Since we are on the come out roll, Frank has decided to make a $10 wager on the pass line and a $1 bet on the eleven.

Roll: 6-5

This is great news for Frank. He has just won the pass line bet (+$10) and the bet on the eleven (also called a YO bet), which pays $15 and is still up to win.

Roll: 1-2

A back and forth start here. Frank loses his pass line bet (-$10) and his bet on the eleven (-$1). He’s still up $14 though and flips another $1 to the eleven.

Roll: 4-2

A point has finally been established (6). Frank loses his eleven bet, because it’s a one-roll bet. He is still up $13 and decides to take $20 in odds on his pass line bet. Frank is also feeling lucky so he places $10 in the come bet area and throws $2 on the hard six.

Roll: 4-4

An eight has been rolled so Frank’s come bet of $10 is moved to the eight. He now needs an eight to be rolled before a seven. Frank is a newer player and elects to not take odds on the eight.

Roll: 5-4

A nine is rolled and has no effect on Frank’s bets.

Roll: 5-1

A six is rolled and that’s the point. Frank has won his pass line bet with odds and lost the hard six bet (-$2). The pass line bet was paid even money (+$10) and the odds were paid 6 to 5 (+$24).

That’s the end of the round and we are at a new come out roll. Frank’s come bet (8) is still up to win and is working on the come out roll. This means a come out roll of seven kills his bet, but a come out roll of 8 will be a winner for him.

Hopefully, you have a grasp of the general flow of a Craps game now. Next, take some time reviewing Craps systems, which are ways to play to play the game of craps.
